8th Grade Band Night at Asheville High School

The wonderful 8th grade band students of Asheville Middle School joined the AHS marching band for performances at the football game vs. Tuscola High School last night.

8th Grade Band

AMS 8th grade band students

Wearing cleverly designed T-shirts duplicating the colors of the AHS marching band uniform, you were hard-pressed to pick the 8th grade students out from their high-school peers — at least from the front; the back of the shirts bore the confident declaration “AHS Band Class of ’22”!

The 8th grade students formed up with the high school band to play the national anthem before the game, and then everyone somehow squeezed into the band section to cheer on the football team.

As the AHS marching band was preparing to begin their half-time show, the 8th grade band kept the atmosphere festive by playing in the stand. Was it just a coincidence that the Asheville football team produced their best play of the season, a thrilling 2-point conversion, after the 8th grade band’s rousing fight song? We think not.

They even got a head-start on learning important AHS band traditions like pointing to any passing aircraft…

playing the fight song…

and not taking yourself too seriously!

Thanks to AMS band directors Amy Shaffer and Ana Bulluck for preparing their students so well, and welcome to the AHS Band family 8th grade!

Travis LeDoyt, World’s Best Young Elvis, Performing at AHS October 10, 2017

Travis LeDoyt, who has been called “the World’s Best Young Elvis,” will be performing at the Asheville High School Auditorium on Tuesday, October 10, 2017 at 7 pm.  The event is sponsored by the Asheville High School Band Association to help raise funds to purchase new instruments.

Tickets are $15 and may be purchased by calling Jenny Farmer at 828-215-3699 or you can buy from any current band member. If there are any tickets remaining after the pre-sale, they will be available at the door.

Travis LeDoyt’s popularity is incredible, selling out more than 90% of his shows, including international shows in Canada, Argentina, Belgium, England, Scotland, and China.

LeDoyt has opened shows for B. B. King, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Johnny Rivers, and many others.  He has performed at more than 60 major casinos including the Harrah’s Casinos, Caesar’s, Hard Rock Casinos, Horseshoe Casino, Cherokee Casinos, and more.  He is a headline entertainer for Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines and this year will be performing on 20 cruises.  He has also been a headliner at Busch Gardens-Tampa and at Hershey Park.  He has headlined national conventions for Fed Ex in Memphis, TN, the International Hot Rod Association in Louisville, KY, and was chosen to headline the Elvis Presley Festival in Tupelo, MS for four consecutive years.

LeDoyt has been featured in the New York Times as the person who looks most like young Elvis, and D. J. Fontana — who was Elvis Presley’s drummer in the ‘50s — says this is “as close as it gets” to seeing Elvis during the ‘50s and ‘60s.

Asheville High School Director of Bands, R. Timothy McCoy, is a longtime friend of LeDoyt’s manager Dick McVey.  “We are so fortunate to have an entertainer of this caliber coming to entertain here in Asheville,” McCoy says.  “Travis sings like Elvis, moves like Elvis and, to top it off, he looks like Elvis in his younger days.  I guarantee that if you see this show you will leave thinking you just saw Elvis in concert.”

McCoy also adds, “This is an opportunity for people to show support for the high school band, to make it possible for us to buy additional instruments and equipment that we need, and get to see a world class show.  It’s a win-win deal for everybody.”

For more information or interview requests, please contact Dick McVey in Nashville at 615-714-3637 or via email at dickmcvey@comcast.net.

I will send out Commitment Forms in March.  I will not have the fall marching band schedule until I get the fall athletics schedule.  I can tell you that we will plan to attend the Enka competition on September 24th, as well as two additional competitions in October.  PLEASE do not schedule anything on these dates.  I would try to avoid making plans on Friday’s in September and October, and Saturday’s in October until we can get the schedule out.  We need 100% at ALL performances.

There will be a Spring Informational Meeting on April 21st at 6:00pm in the band room.  This meeting is highly encouraged for ALL students and parents of marching band members.  I will go over expectations, fees, schedules, and much more at this meeting.  We will also reveal our 2016 field show at this meeting.
